Shuhada' Davitt meaning: What does Sinéad O'Connor's new Muslim name mean? Which other celebs have converted ...

Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor has announced she has converted to Islam and changed her name to Shuhada' Davitt.

O'Connor, 51, released the news on Twitter and along with selfies of her wearing a hijab.

Also changing the name of her Twitter page, O'Connor said her decision "is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian's journey".

In a video she re cited the Azan, or call to prayer, later apologising for any pronunciation mistakes.

What does Shuhada' mean?

Shuhada' means "martyrs" in Arabic.

O'Connor spells her name with an apostrophe at the end.

Last year O'Connor changed her name to Magda Davitt, announcing at the time that "Sinead is dead" and that she wanted to be "free of the patriarchal slave names. Free of the parental curses.”

This is not the first time O'Connor has hit the headlines for her relationship with religion.

She was ordained as a priest in 1999 by a Catholic group not connected to the Roman Catholic Church, of which she has been a vocal critic.

She ripped up a picture of Pope John Paul II during a Saturday Night Live appearance in 1992.
