Letter: An honest conversation about Islam

A New Hampshire resident recently shared this Facebook post: “BREAKING: In a 5-3 decision the Supreme Court sided w/President Trump agreed public schools will NOT teach the tenets of Islam or Sharia law / This rolls back Obama regulations that forced children to learn about Islam as a religion of peace. Not anymore!”

What was wrong with that post, like so many things I see posted about Islam, was everything; the Supreme Court is not currently in session and there is no (President) Obama regulation that forces children to learn about Islam.

What’s wrong with posts like that, unfortunately, is that they are too often typical of a bias and prejudice held by many people who know so little about Islam that they’re willing to believe almost anything.

On Wednesday, Sept. 26, I will be presenting â€" as I have at about 50 public libraries around the state â€" one of my “Ask a Muslim Anythingâ € programs at the Concord Public Library at 6 p.m.

The America I know, where I and my neighbors live and work, is one where most Americans aren’t haters, even those who’re fearful and concerned about a people or religion they know little about.

Come join us â€" bring your questions and concerns and let us have a conversation about them.
